Representative of Indonesia Trusted as Deputy Director General of World Intellectual Property Organization

Ambassador Hasan Kleib, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) to the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO), and Other International Organizations, was elected by acclamation as Deputy Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ).

The election was held at the WIPO Cooordination Committee session which took place at WIPO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland, Thursday (03/12/2020) local time.

Apart from Hasan Kleib, three other deputies were also elected, from the United States, China and France. The deputies will start their term of service from January 1, 2021 to September 30, 2026

Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Yasonna H. Laoly expressed his pride at the election of Hasan Kleib as deputy in the world organization.

“To be proud of and to be an Indonesian historical incision, for the first time Indonesian representatives have held high strategic positions in international organizations,” said Yasonna, in Jakarta, Thursday (03/12/2020).

Yasonna said that the nomination of Indonesia’s representative as a Deputy Director General of WIPO had been agreed upon by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), and he conveyed it while attending the WIPO annual session on 21 September.

Menkumham emphasized that participation in WIPO is evidence of Indonesia’s great concern regarding intellectual property rights and all its protection efforts.

Moreover, currently the Ministry of Law and Human Rights continues to strengthen the socialization and protection of intellectual property carried out by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI).

“The benefits are very large for Indonesia, and will make intellectual property more valued,” he said.

Indonesia’s success in occupying a high and strategic position at WIPO, added Yasonna, is also in accordance with President Joko Widodo’s mission to place the nation’s best sons / daughters in international organizations.

This will also contribute to the development of innovation and creativity related to intellectual property in the world, including in Indonesia, in line with the vision of an Advanced Indonesia, and will make Indonesia proud in the world arena.

“We continue to monitor Indonesia’s nomination as deputy at WIPO and finally it was achieved thanks to Indonesia’s activeness, consistency and shrewdness,” concluded Yasonna.

WIPO is an international organization founded in 1967 with the mission of developing a balanced and effective international intellectual property system. Currently, WIPO has 193 members.
